How to Engage in Conversation With a Family Member or Friend Suffering With Depression?

If you know of a family member or friend that is struggling with depression, at times you may feel completely hopeless. You often don’t know what to say, or how to act, but you want to make sure that your loved one still feels supported.

Unfortunately in our society, depression is often not looked at as a serious condition in the same way as other physical illnesses like cancer and other diseases. This can cause patients with depression to feel as if they are being judged or blamed for an illness that may not have the same clear cut symptoms or manifestations as other physical illnesses.

Tips When Talking With a Loved One Suffering From Depression

Below are a few tips that we’d like for you to keep in mind when trying to be there for a friend or family member who may be dealing with depression.

Be Accepting of Your Loved One

Being accepted is often what someone with depression is most looking for. Ensure that you’re using encouraging words and actions when it comes to discussing the emotional pain that you’re loved one is experiencing.

Educate Yourself

Understanding depression often starts with educating yourself about the condition. This includes researching reputable sources to learn more about the disorder and how it affects individuals and families. By having this knowledge, you’ll be able to have a much better understanding of how depression is affecting your loved one.

Provide Real Support

It’s one thing to be an ear for a loved one to discuss their emotional pain, but it’s also important to take action when it comes to helping someone cope with depression. This may be actions such as offering to take a loved one to a therapist appointment, or spending quality time together during a time when you may know that your loved one is struggling. These acts may seem trivial, but they often mean quite a bit to someone who is feeling alone and distant.

Encouraging More Balanced Thinking

Many times those dealing with depression are bombarded with negative thought patterns. Much of our work using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is based on helping individuals to focus on more positive behaviors and patterns. As a loved one, you can also work to use positive statements and actions to help an individual think about the positive aspects of their live, despite the pain they’re no doubt experiencing.
